Thanks to weather apps we can now plan in advance! During the week of the scheduled session I’ll check the forecast and if it isn’t promising then I will always encourage rescheduling the session. My opinion is that a photo shoot is a special occasion and should not be compromised with lacklustre conditions.
You can set the tone for the session by making your outfits as relaxed or as smart as you would like! In terms of a colour palette I recommend choosing at least 3 complementary colours or a set of tones that work well together. For example, blue/grey/white or tones of earthy colours like green/stone/white. Layering works really well (add a scarf, cardigan or an open buttoned shirt) and a pop of colour like yellow is very effective.
A big no to thick stripes, tops with pictures, and all wearing the same colour shirts (especially white)
I like to include some movement in the captures such as walking along a road. If you are feeling adventurous and the setting permits it we can also take sitting/lying down shots but this is generally the exception and not stock standard with every session.
The best part of capturing kids is their unpredictability. You just don’t know what you’ll get (and it’s usually good!). For parents, I know, this certainty creates a measure of panic. A relaxed and flexible mindset always works best; I have found that a gentle and unhurried approach will always yields a good outcome!
There are a few select locations I use within the Hilton and Pietermaritzburg area. These are places that I know with confidence will give great light and good backdrops to the photos. Safety is also a concern which is why I will only shoot in areas I know to be secure.
Yes I do travel outside the Pietermaritzburg area and have done many shoots on farmsteads and in the Drakensburg and Midlands with great results.
Yes I photograph occasions with a documentary approach to capture the essence of the celebrations.
Yes absolutely! All images are uploaded to you as high resolution files.
No, sorry (but not sorry) Props are a distancing element for natural light photos and do not enhance the connection I aim to show through the captures.
