Over the past few years I have noticed a definite increase in the number of sessions I do with teenage/young adult kids. Perhaps we become more nostalgic as they (we?) get older. I think, too, it has to do with the notion that our nuclear family faces imminent danger of becoming dislocated by a love affair, or There is a Life Away From Home. I speak wholeheartedly from experience because I did ‘said’ shoot the year my son finished matric. I had this misplaced idea that I would lose him to the lure of varsity life. And that visits would be by appointment only. Fortunately I was very wrong (but I’m still happy I got the photos I wanted). Life does twist and turn unexpectedly as our kids navigate their own pathways but I have discovered, through my own experience and in what I have observed, that family will always be the anchor.
The cord just gets longer.
